The Gluttonous Gardener
The Gluttonous Gardener is a successful gift business with an innovative range of products based around food and horticulture.
Also known as Glut, they have achieved strong growth over the last 20 years through an unwavering commitment to the quality of their products and the excellent personal service they provide. The company pioneered the use of nominated day delivery and other innovations that set them apart from being ‘just another mail order company’.
Glut is a top ten partner seller on Not on the High Street, being regularly featured in their Christmas magazine. Most of the time, the Glut customer is looking for something a little different or quirky, and this branding makes the company an ideal fit for Not on the High Street.
Though this is a great opportunity, it also comes with risks. Not on the High Street expects top sellers to be able to deliver gifts at volume, which means considerable investment. Also, if Glut isn’t featured in Not on the High Street’s promotions or top listings, this could cause a big drop in sales.
They needed to diversify and develop their own sales channel based on their unique delivery offering. It was with this goal in mind that they first spoke to us about developing a bespoke e-commerce platform.
It was clear from the start that an off-the-shelf e-commerce platform wasn’t going to be suitable for Glut. Their guaranteed delivery dates would have to be dynamically calculated based on the customer’s postcode and products ordered, as well as including lead times on many personalisation options.
This required a bespoke system capable of performing these many calculations, so we used Craft Commerce, a flexible and customisable tool which easily integrates with Craft CMS.
The one-page checkout process works with a wealth of product personalisation options, while still being clear and easy to use. Completed orders are passed via an XML download into the Mail Order Manager fulfilment system.
The system can calculate complex shipping options based on customer locations with next day, mainland, and Saturday options, and the ability to create individual shipping rules in the admin system. Discount codes (both single and unlimited use) can be applied to orders, products or entire product categories.
Because some gifts are seasonal with limited stock, we included a ‘product back in stock’ email system to notify customers if they sign up to receive updates for a specific product. Automatic product reviews and date reminder emails are also sent to customers who have shopped on the website before.
The new platform allowed Glut to bring their excellent customer service to a wider audience without compromising the quality of their products.
Their excellence was recognised in 2015 when they won the Best Product award for their Grapevine Gift Set at Not on the High Street’s annual Make Awards.
They followed this up with the Best Customer Service award the following year, beating 5000 other companies to win this honour.
“I have nothing but admiration...this was a technical nightmare in my eyes, you've made it look all too easy!”
